Rules
Each country in the world has their own rules for operating a motorcycle. Most of them require the rider to have a valid, in date license. Some documents can be used in multiple regions, whereas others are specific to one place.
In the UK people need to acquire a provisional license before they can learn to drive. They must then take a test in order to receive a full one. If they want to take this test using their own bike then they must make sure that it has a full MOT and is taxed.
Provisional licenses do not require any testing. They can be easily applied for online. When it comes to a full license, people should be aware that different types of bikes are separated into their own classes.
People aged 16 and up can ride mopeds that reach 45 km/h, three wheel bikes up to 50cc and light quad bikes. Light motorcycles that are up to 125 cc can only be driven by over 17 year olds. People have to be at least 19 before they can use standard motorcycles. If someone wishes to operate an unrestricted bike of any size then there are two routes available to them. They can either get a progressive access license aged 21 or wait until they are 24 to get direct access.
Categories
A motorcycle license test is split into two categories. These are theory and practical. The theory side is a written exam that is timed. This is done under standard examination conditions in a government building. The practical test takes place on the road where the learner can show that they can operate a bike safely and legally.
It is recommended that learners take lessons before they start their practical. This is so that they can arm themselves with the right skills and knowledge to pass. Most UK communities have a lesson programme where people can pay for multiple sessions.
There are several books and apps that can be used to revise for a theory test. It is best to use the latest ones so that they are up to date with what questions are being asked. There are also hazard perception apps which are very useful in preparation for modern motorcycle tests.
