The Meaning Of These Words

The motorbikes of the modern age offer some fantastic innovations and features. However, some people choose instead to shun them in favour of older models. They believe that these bikes of days gone by represent a simpler, golden age for the hobby.

The terms “classic”, “vintage” and “antique” are often used when talking about these models. It is not a simple thing to know the difference between these. In the UK a motorbike can be considered classic depending on the year it was created.

In this country a bike may be considered a “veteran” bike if it was built before the year 1915. They are also called vintage in the motorcycle enthusiast community. However, in the US these terms are more freely used, without concrete specification. This can lead to confusion easily.

Generally a classic motorcycle is one that has existed for over 25 years. It will also be recognisable by its appearance and style. There are several bike designs that are considered true classics by many people. This can include many of the older Harley-Davidson ones.

To be vintage, a bike will have to have been built before 1975. This is according to the official definition by the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA). They also explain that to be an antique the vehicle needs to be at least 35 years old. However, in the US a bike can be registered as an antique after just 20 years.

Models

The 1969 – 1978 Honda CB 750 is a prime example of a popular antique motorcycle. People like it not just for its exotic aesthetic but also its historical value. This model was a game changer in the design of bikes. It was not unique in terms of its engine but it was one of the first models to offer such a popular design to a mass audience.

Similar to this, the 1970 – 1973 BMW /5 is considered a classic amongst super bike aficionados. This Bavarian model offered the same power as similar Japanese bikes but with a very different look. It is revered for its handling, which even today is considered impressively smooth. This bike retains a high value amongst collectors due to its performance and significance to the world of biking.
